Stantec expands focus on science facilities with L2P acquisition

Engineering consulting giant Stantec has acquired L2P, a Philadelphia firm that designs research centers and other complex facilities.

Canada-based Stantec launched in 1954 and has more than 20,000 employees across six continents. The firm designs skyscrapers, industrial installations and other facilities for its clients.

L2P is a smaller player that operates in the same market. It has 40 employees.

The L2P engineers who are joining Stantec as part of the deal will bolster the Canadian firm’s facility design capabilities.

L2P has designed a 50-acre research and development hub in Pennsylvania for industrial material supplier Air Products. The firm also drew up the blueprints for a 312,000-square-foot innovation center located on the University of Delaware’s campus.

L2P’s track record will make it easier for Stantec to win building design deals with clients in research-intensive industries. Thanks to the acquisition, Stantech now has more past projects that it can point to when a prospective client asks about its engineers’ experience in complex facility development.

Another area where the acquisition will strengthen Stantech’s capabilities is sustainable design.

L2P worked on the first facility in the U.S. with a design intended to meet the LEED-Commercial Interiors Gold sustainability standard. The firm was also involved in the planning of 2000 Arch Street, a proposed 18-story building in Philadelphia that likewise features an environmentally friendly design.

“L2P uniquely complements our existing offerings in the Philadelphia market where we are already a recognized leader in healthcare and education design,” noted Stantec senior vice president Josh Gould. “The additional knowledge and expertise that they bring will allow us to support all of our clients in a more comprehensive manner.”

L2P argues that the acquisition will also benefit its existing clients. After L2P becomes part of Stantech, the Philadelphia firm’s “clients will benefit from a broader geographic footprint and the expanded resources afforded by a global network of experts and services,” explained L2P managing principal John LaProcido.
