John Doyle is the new CEO of Marsh McLennan

John Doyle is the new top executive at Marsh McLennan, a financial and consulting services firm with 83,000 employees worldwide.

Doyle is taking over the dual title of president and CEO from outgoing Marsh McLennan boss Daniel Glaser, who will retire at the end of the year. Glaser was appointed to the top post at the firm in 2013 and went on to grow its annual revenue to nearly $20 billion during his tenure.

Marsh McLennan is a 150-year-old firm with a presence in many different parts of the consulting market.

Marsh McLennan has a management consulting subsidiary, Oliver Wyman, that is among the largest in the business with annual revenues of $2.5 billion. Olivier Wyman provides sales, marketing, financial and manufacturing advice to its clients, as well as a variety of other services.

Another Marsh McLennan subsidiary with a significant presence in the consulting market is Marsh.

Marsh’s primary focus area is the insurance brokerage market. But it also operates a consulting business that assists with tasks such as developing employee benefits plans and carrying out corporate acquisitions.

Incoming Marsh McLennan boss John Doyle began his career at insurance giant AIG. He was the CEO of AIG’s commercial insurance business before joining Marsh McLennan in 2019.

Doyle’s first job at the firm that he now leads was heading its Marsh insurance and professional services subsidiary. That’s the same role Doyle’s outgoing predecessor, current Marsh McLennan CEO Daniel Glaser, held before his appointment to the top post.

Another similarity between the two executives’ career paths is that both Doyle and Glaser served as COOs of Marsh McLennan for several years.

“I am thankful to Dan and to our Board for their support and confidence in me,” Doyle said in a statement released after his promotion. “We have terrific momentum and the capabilities and expertise needed to drive innovation and growth, deliver critical client solutions and create value for shareholders.”
