Bowman acquires SEIE to grow solar engineering business

Nasdaq-listed engineering and architecture firm Bowman has acquired SEIE, a consultancy that helps utilities design solar farms.

Bowman expects the acquisition to add $1.5 million in annual net service billings to its balance sheet.

Reston, Virginia-based Bowman has 1,700 employees in more than 60 offices worldwide. The firm designs residential buildings, commercial facilities and public works such as water infrastructure.

SEIE, the renewable energy consultancy that Bowman has bought, does business as SEI Professional Services. The Colorado-based consultancy designs solar panel installations for clients such as homebuilders and utilities.

A firm can hire SEI Professional Services to not only design a new solar farm but also assist with the construction process. SEI Professional Services can also help with other technical tasks, such as infrastructure maintenance.

“The solar energy market is expanding much faster than we could possibly capitalize on alone,” commented SEI Professional Services chief executive officer Jeff Ruppert. “By joining Bowman, our opportunities for growth and continuing to be the premier engineering group for solar and storage projects will only be strengthened.”

The story of how SEI Professional Services established itself in the renewable energy market is an important aspect of Bowman’s move to acquire the firm.

SEI Professional Services was established by staff members from SEI, a respected nonprofit that trains solar technicians. SEI was one of the sector’s first training providers when it launched in the early 1990s and has since prepared more than 80,000 students for solar industry careers.

SEI Professional Services’ ties to SEI is a major asset from a marketing standpoint. As a result, it could make it easier for Bowman to realize a return on the acquisition.

“Our renewable energy business is growing at a rapid rate and the acquisition of SEIE will serve to further accelerate that growth,” said Bowman chief executive officer Gary Bowman.  “The leadership team at SEIE is extraordinarily knowledgeable and highly respected as experts throughout the solar industry.”
