Kyndryl upgrades WPP’s network and employee devices

Kyndryl has shared details about a large IT modernization project it recently completed for marketing services giant WPP.
The project is notable because gives a glimpse into the IT operations of two major players in the consulting market. Kyndryl, a former IBM unit, is the world’s top provider of IT infrastructure management services. WPP is the world’s largest marketing agency.
The first leg of the project focused on WPP’s internal server cluster. With Kyndryl’s help, the marketing giant retired 4,000 of its 6,000 on-premises servers and moved 1,000 to the cloud. The firms didn’t specify if the latter machines were replaced by cloud instances or simply moved to a co-location facility.
The project drew on Kyndryl Bridge, a suite of more than 190 IT consulting services offered by the former IBM unit. Those services help companies monitor their IT systems for bugs and find ways to increase efficiency. There are also more domain-specific offerings, like consulting packages through which Kyndryl can help a firm with its data analytics projects.
The on-premises network at WPP’s 46 office locations was another focus of the project. According to Kyndryl, its experts upgraded the on-site Wi-Fi devices to boost coverage. They also rolled out firewalls to protect employees from malicious web traffic.
WPP’s fleet of employee laptops was upgraded as well. Kyndryl replaced some of the machines and equipped them with a suite of business applications that WPP staffers need to do their work. Notably, the companies say the laptop fleet is “centrally managed through a modern workplace platform.” This likely means they rolled out an endpoint management product that allows administrators to perform tasks such as downloading operating system patches through a single pane of glass.
For a consultancy, deals with big brands like WPP are beneficial in multiple ways. Besides providing a significant source of revenue, such contracts also provide valuable case studies that make it easier for Kyndryl’s salespeople to win over clients.
