Accenture buys Italian network infrastructure consultancy Fibermind

Accenture has acquired Fibermind, a boutique IT consultancy that helps internet providers in Italy carry out upgrades to their network infrastructure.
Fibermind has been in business for about two decades. The firm maintains its headquarters is in Rovigo, a small Northern Italian city notable for its architecture, and employs approximately 400 people. Those staffers will become part of Accenture’s Accenture Operations business once the transaction closes.
Fibermind helps internet providers in Italy adopt the technologies necessary to deliver 5G connections to consumers. The consultancy also works on projects related to fiber optic networking infrastructure. In its announcement of the acquisition, Accenture revealed that Fibermind counts many of Italy’s largest carriers as clients.
Upgrading a carrier’s network infrastructure requires more than just IT know-how. Internet providers must also work with local municipalities to secure the permits necessary for the deployment of new networking hardware. There are also numerous other tasks involved in the process, from testing newly deployed networking gear to producing paperwork that documents how the equipment works. Fibermind can assist its clients with all those tasks.
Mauro Macchi, the head of Accenture’s Italian business, commented in prepared remarks that “as a result of the acquisition, we will expand our capabilities to offer end-to-end network engineering services, delivering higher quality, greater innovation, and more rigorous cost management to our clients.”
Fibermind’s know-how will put Accenture in a stronger position to compete for IT consulting contracts from Italian internet providers. Given that 5G infrastructure is generally powered by technology products from the same limited set of IT vendors, Fibermind’s expertise is likely also applicable beyond Italy. That means the acquisition could potentially help Accenture win deals with carriers in other markets.
“The combination of our expertise and capabilities represents an important opportunity for us to strengthen our leadership in Italy and to expand outside the country,” commented Fibermind general manager Andrea Targa.
