Accenture acquires engineering consultancy Boslan

This article was written by a human. Here’s how to tell.

Accenture has acquired Boslan, a consultancy that specializes in planning and managing large-scale construction projects.

The deal bolsters Accenture’s headcount by about 1,000 professionals. The Boslan team will join the consulting giant’s Industry X business, which provides engineering services to organizations embarking on large construction initiatives. The business also manages many of Accenture’s consulting engagements in the industrial sector.

Bilbao, Spain-headquartered Boslan has a presence in a half dozen countries including the United States. It helps public and private sector organizations plan large-scale infrastructure projects. After a project’s planning phase gives way to construction work, Bilbao can supervise the various field activities involved in the process to ensure quality requirements are met. It also offers a number of related services focused on tasks such as helping clients negotiate with suppliers.

One of the verticals in which Boslan is active is the green infrastructure sector. It advises clients on the construction of sustainable energy facilities such as wind farms, solar power plants and electric vehicle charging networks. The firm is active in a number of other markets as well, the perhaps most notable of which is the data center construction segment.

Spending on new data centers has increased a fast clip in recent years thanks partly to the growing enterprise adoption of AI. Machine learning models need graphics cards to run efficiently. Those graphics cards, in turn, must be hosted in specialized data centers that can meet their power and cooling requirements, which are more demanding than those of conventional servers.

Many existing data centers don’t have the equipment necessary to host large-scale GPU installations. As a result, companies are building new, specialized facilities to support their AI initiatives. This trend is driving demand for engineering services of the kind that Boslan provides.

The purchase of Boslan marks Accenture’s third acquisition in the engineering consulting market since the start of 2023. Its previous two deals were in the U.S. and UK.
