Adobe appoints enterprise software veteran Anil Chakravarthy as CEO
Adobe has named long-time enterprise software executive Anil Chakravarthy as CEO.
Chakravarthy will officially step into the role in December. He will also take a seat on Adobe’s board. Shantanu Narayen, the software vendor’s outgoing CEO, will move into the role of executive chair.
Adobe’s software is used by a sizable percentage of the world’s marketing consultancies. The company, which is best known as the developer of Photoshop, also sells several other design applications. It offers them alongside cloud services that automate marketing tasks such as planning ad campaigns. Those offerings are the responsibility of a business unit called the Customer Experience Orchestration group that is headed by none other than Chakravarthy.
Notably, the executive also leads Adobe’s worldwide field services division, which is effectively its consulting practice. It provides technical support and other professional services to enterprise clients.
Chakravarthy joined Adobe in 2020 following a four-year stint at the helm of Informatica, a major enterprise software vendor. He earlier held senior roles at several brand-name cybersecurity and consulting firms.
Adobe’s marketing software business has grown significantly under Chakravarthy’s leadership. The company doesn’t break out sales numbers for that part of its product portfolio. However, Adobe’s most recent earnings report revealed that its marketing and creative software groups together accounted for about two thirds of its revenue.
Chakravarthy also played an important role in the implementation of Adobe’s AI strategy. During his tenure, the company’s marketing business launched several LLM-powered services designed to automate repetitive parts of users’ work. It introduced a tool called GenStudio that can generate ad visuals based on prompts. Another Adobe product, CX Enterprise Coworker, helps marketing teams tackle issues such as cart abandonment.
AI can be expected to remain a major focus for Adobe under the new leadership. The worldwide field services that Chakravarthy currently leads will likely also remain a priority. Recent job postings indicate that Adobe is actively recruiting forward deployed engineers, specialized consultants who work at client organizations’ offices.
