BDO tops M&A advisory rankings with 2,095 deals in 2022
BDO Global’s corporate finance practice had a busy 2022: it worked on no fewer than 2,095 mergers and acquisitions in the past year.
BDO is the fifth largest accounting firm in the world behind Deloitte, EY, PwC and KPMG. When a company is buying a competitor, it can bring BDO aboard to determine how much it should pay and whether the competitor’s books are all in order.
The fact that the firm worked on more deals than Deloitte and its other larger rivals is a big achievement. However, it’s important to point out that BDO’s competitors did well too during 2022.
BDO leads the market by deal volume but not by total deal value. The number of the transactions it completed was the highest in the industry, but those transactions’ combined dollar value is a different matter: several BDO rivals set higher scores this year.
Still, BDO fared well: the deals it worked on in 2022 were worth a combined $114.6 billion.
It’s also worth comparing the numbers with BDO’s yesteryear results. BDO increased the number of deals it worked on from 2,020 in 2021 to 2,095 in 2022, even though worldwide M&A volume declined 30% during the same time period.
BDO says that 38% of the deals its consultants helped carry out involved private equity firms. Another 26% involved companies with business operations in multiple regions.
Across all its business lines, BDO’s revenue rose 12.5% in fiscal 2022 to $12.8 billion. The firm has 111,307 employees across 1,803 offices.
